News Roundup 1/6/17 — Glad All Over

6 January 2017 — east and midwest, some areas have gone from the outhouse to the penthouse in just a matter of days…Pennsylvania’s Jack Frost got drenched on Tuesday, temps soaring into the 50s, but they’re back to 100% this morning. Sister area Big Boulder almost there, hopes to be 100% by tomorrow…different place, same story at Steamboat Colorado. Well, not really the same at all, except the weather did suck but now it doesn’t. And in Steamboat’s case, the unpleasant weather delivered two feet of fresh snow. So that’s pretty good…move down to the Front Range and we’re glad to see Loveland pick up a foot of fresh, while A-Basin grabbed that and more on the other side of the hill. Loveland looking good with everything running today except lift 9…up in New Hampshire rain turned to snow at Attitash, they’re now 90% open and looking good in the photo above…lower midwest we had a whole bunch of places shut down midweek, including Alpine Valley and Boston Mills in Ohio; by the wee hours of yesterday morning the guns were back on and everything came up roses…up in Wabasha WI fave Coffee Mill ski area seemingly unaffected by the fluctuating weather; they’ve been at 100% since before Christmas…and update on World Cup action, in case you missed it, pair of mens and womens slalom events this week in Zagreb, Croatia; those are those nighttime spectacles where they crown the winners as Snow King and Snow Queen respectively. If you’re guessing Mikaela Shiffrin that would be fair, but regret to report her consecutive win streak came to a close with an uncharacteristic DNF in the first run. Two other notable DNFs among the usual elite included Wendy Holdener and Nina Loeseth, both of whom failed to complete the first run. That opened the door that Slovakia’s Veronika Velez Zuzulova has been knocking on, she was crowned the Snow Queen at the Tuesday evening slalom after finishing second in three straight slalom events. Wednesday night the men went at it, and after 8 winless years, Manfred Moelgg claimed the win at the slalom in Zagreb, ahead of Felix Neureuther and Henrik Kristoffersen. Have a great weekend, get out there and ski! Or snowboard!
