12/21/17 Welcome to Winter with Friends and Family…

First the friends…Long time ski bum reader & friend Rick Beitel checked in this morning with an update on Deer Mountain aka Mystic Miner Mountain Resort in the Black Hills, recently auctioned at Sheriff’s Sale and not gonna open this season. Due to the legalities, procedural procedures, yadda yadda yadda, earliest we’re hoping for reopening is 2019. That’s the graphic above, and I don’t care who you are, that looks like some fun skiing right there…in better news from the heartland, albeit north a bit, Wild Mountain up in Taylors Falls Minnesota reports that they’re 100% open as of today. And, it’s not one of those single-slope deals, this is the real thing as midwest goes…finally snowed in Utah, Snowbird reports 7″ in the last 24; they’re calling it a “powder day.” The Bird usually doesn’t even blink at 7″, let alone cry “powder day,” so it shows you just how desperate they were for some white stuff…pleased to say it looks like the same deal is headed for Colorado, where it is desperately needed. Our aforementioned buddy Rick is headed that way next month with daughter Claire, so we want things to be in a LOT better shape for their trip. The Beitels are bound for a couple days at Breckenridge and Keystone, and weighing their options for one more resort. Naturally I don’t want to influence too much, but after skiing at those two monsters they may need to reCOOPERate…follow up on yesterday’s news from Anthony Lakes Oregon, they will open indeed this weekend thanks to the recent snow. Both alpine and nordie, with grooming, Saturday and Sunday…eastern expansions…Killington Vermont now operating out of Bear Mountain base, that’s home to the famous (or infamous) Outer Limits trail. Kmart hopes to be down to the Rt. 4 Skyeship base by the weekend…up Route 100 in Warren, Sugarbush getting bombed with snow, now has the all-natural Castlerock section open, they plan to open Mt. Ellen (the former Glen Ellen) tomorrow…over in New Hampshire, Loon has expanded their open terrain to the south base, that’s that section they opened a couple years back that really gave ’em a lot more elbow room…wrapping up with family…my brother Glen checks in from the mid-Atlantic today with an update on regional biggie Wintergreen, sez WG “is slowly opening, but starting Christmas eve temps drop down to 23 degrees and stay below 32 till 12/30 (they don’t show the forecast past that) so they will be blowing all week to save current open trails and open new ones. I gotta believe they’ll have half the mountain open by New Year’s weekend. In my experience, the skiing season at Wgreen usually goes from MLK weekend to late March. Any cold temps/skiing at Christmas is a bonus.” Glen is bound for Colorado a week after the Beitels, he tends to favor Vail and A-Basin.
