Weekend Highlighted by Openings, Speed Events

Openings include the debut of Big Snow in the New Jersey Meadowlands; yesterday they had none less than Lindsey Vonn to kick it off as the first official skier on this long awaited indoor piste. Time will tell if it’s to be successful…turning outside and driving north a bit, Plattekill in NY’s Catskills is set to kick off the season tomorrow (Saturday 7th), saying it’s the earliest in their history. Go a bit further upstate and West Mountain will also be open this weekend, they’re at the southern end of the Adirondacks and while no word on whether or not this is a record, it’s definitely ahead of schedule…since we’re talking about West, we might as well look west where Colorado’s closest-with-the-mostest Loveland started spinning chair 6 yesterday and they’ll be cranking up chair 3 in Loveland Valley tomorrow. Underrated ski area if ever there was one…in the Dakotas, Terry Peak opens today with the Stewart Lift, Snow Carpet and Surprise Express Chairlift operating…back to the legendary Lindsey for a moment, do whatever you can to catch that final season biopic on HBO called, uh, Lindsey Vonn: The Final Season. I don’t have hobo but my daughter finagled some sort of online thing and the movie is terrific. Especially for those of us who recall when she would seemingly win speed events at will…speaking of speed events, FIS World Cup action the ladies are in Lake Louise this weekend for a downhill and a super G, and yes — Mikaela Shiffrin will be competing. The men meanwhile are in Beaver Creek for speed events highlighted by the Birds of Prey downhill…back to the resort biz, just got word that Black Mountain in New Hampshire and Detroit Mountain in Minnesota have joined the Indy Pass. If you aren’t familiar with it, this is a multi-mountain pass that provides two visits to each of some three dozen small to mid sized resorts across the country. I think it’s a fantastic deal…regret to report what I believe to be the first fatality of the season, 65-year-old Stewart Milus of Boise ID died following an accident on the Lower River Run at Sun Valley Resort Saturday afternoon.
