A Very Mushy Christmas

Ccccold temps belie the forecast for the northeast ski resorts, but they are taking it seriously and we expect an overwhelming number to be closed tomorrow. Attitash NH, for example, has already announced that they’ll be shut down tomorrow, as well as sister resort Crotched Mountain in the southern part of the state. So that’s north and south, but as for central New Hampshire, Gunstock Mountain in the Lakes Region is determined to be open and giving away free lift tix for the day. They figure if you’re crazy enough to go skiing in two inches of rain, they’re gonna be crazy enough to send you up the hill on their dime. Sounds like fun, albeit wet fun…since we’re on the subject of Peak Resorts‘ properties, word from Southern Vermont is that Mount Snow has opened the long awaited new lodge at the Carinthia base. That’s our photo of the day above…In Saalbach Austria today, overall mens leader Marcel Hirscher back on top of the podium in a slalom event. Pleased to report that German tech star Felix Neureuther made his World Cup comeback; he’s been injured for some time but got back on the horse today. Not much of a finish, but you gotta re-start somewhere. The boys move to Madonna di Campiglio, Italy, for more turny competition on Saturday. The ladies meanwhile, kick off a pair of tech events tomorrow in Courchevel…back to Vermont, Magic Mountain scheduled to string up the chairs on their new (old) green lift today; I say “old” because parts of this lift were twisting in the wind for a couple of decades while management fizzed. The fact that they’ve resurrected this thing and are actually going to operate it this season is a testament to how much better they’re doing these days…the rainy mess rumbled through the midwest today…Cannonsburg Michigan led the way in closing for the day, they plan to reopen tomorrow late afternoon…Mad River Mountain Ohio had their official season opener yesterday, and promptly closed for the rain today. They’re planning to re-spin Saturday…California’s early opener Boreal plans to smash the proverbial champagne bottle on a brandy new beginner lift tomorrow…Powder Mountain Utah just announced a new partnership with Whisper Ridge; they’ll offer heli-skiing, snowmobile tours, yurt trips, etc.
