Angela checks in from The Mountain Top at Grand Geneva Resort Wisconsin, sez they’re smashing that proverbial bottle of champagne on the season tomorrow. Well that’s not exactly how she put it, but the point is they’re doing some final dry runs this afternoon and there are feet of snow on the ground, so it kicks off tomorrow. Looks like the season is gonna be great in Lake Geneva. Photo above taken last year — I have a feeling those kids can’t wait to return…gotta love the midwest, in some respects it’s a lot harder to put out a good skiing product on these hills and bumps…especially when you gotta deal with some kind of moron in Belmont Michigan, that’s home to Cannonsburg Ski & Ride near Grand Rapids. They’re gearing up for opening day tomorrow, when this happened:
Attention friends, WE NEED HELP! At 5am this morning, someone pulled into our parking lot, ran across the bridge, and whipped a big rock at our groomer while it was operating. There is now major damage to our windshield. We are offering a $1,000 Cannonsburg gift card to the person who provides info that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person/people who did this. We are a small business, and things like this are major setbacks to the hill. It affects all of us. If you have info please call our main office at 616-874-6711 OR stop in. Thank you!
…similar deal earlier this month on the UP at Marquette Mountain, they were starting to ramp up snowmaking ops and found out that their pumphouse equipment had been vandalized. Well a quick workaround and they’re now open and running smoothly…checking in from northern Minnesota, Wild Mountain now at 100% open as of this morning, that’s fantastic…down in Ohio, need to back off my predictions for Boston Mills and Brandywine, rain did some damage and they won’t be ready until (hopefully) the end of next week…results this morning in Val Gardena, the old master and his art, Aksel Lund Svindal won the super G. That’s his first in quite some time; he’s been plagued by injuries that would’ve left most of us hobbled. Svindal now leads the overall, but it’s just a matter of time before Marcel Hirscher surges ahead…we used to call them “tech weenies” but I don’t think that’s politically correct anymore…back to Wisconsin, props to Trollhaugen Resort, they’re doing quite a thing already this season and they’re open tonight until 3 AM, which I guess is tomorrow…UP means “Upper Peninsula.”
