3/5/18 — Ol’ Man Winter Strikes Back

Squaw Valley and Mammoth Mountain CA in the news this weekend, Squaw Valley first after a Friday avy took down five people — only one serious injury and none life-threatening. Saturday a big avy partially buried three up by the High Five Express lift at Mammoth. After about five feet of snow last week, it could’ve been a lot worse. I chuckle a bit when I read the major news media, which generally seems bewildered that the mountain would dare re-open yesterday! Seems society today demands that risk be removed from everything. That aside, it’s a relief that everyone is more or less ok…that five feet in Cali translated to almost three feet in Utah; Snowbird claiming 31″ from the storm, including 9″ last night…World Cup news, Marcel Hirscher swept a pair of technical races this past weekend in Kranjska Gora, which gave him enough points to claim the men’s overall globe, again…the New York and New Jersey well-to-do and Connecticut gold coasters enjoyed epic conditions in Vermont this weekend, southern Vermont’s Stratton serving up particularly outstanding snow. Unfortunately a lot of them drove home to find they’d been without power for days, sorting through refrigerators with spoiled food in freezing homes. Seems not all the power companies learned “preparedness” nor anything else from Hurricane Sandy’s aftermath…across the valley from Stratton, the Magic Mountain faithful enjoyed what might’ve been the best of the season thus far, photo above from Bill O’Hara taken Saturday.
