1/10/18 Wednesday News Update

Well huzzah, Colorado finally getting the goods. Steamboat Resort meteorologist Joel Gratz sez the white stuff began in earnest this morning around 7 AM, and they should pick up 3-6″ today. Tomorrow will be a break in the action, then bang, another 5-10″ lined up for Friday…down in Summit County and whatnot, nothing yet at Loveland or out at Vail but they’re all expecting the storm to roll in around mid afternoon…good news all around in Utah; Snowbird picked up 6″ overnight and neighbor Alta has picked up 9″ in some spots since this morning, that’s great news and more to come…tough deal in California with the heavy rains, only positive I can think of is it’s looking good up in the Southern California mountains. Big Bear Mountain Resort pulled in 4″ of fresh, while over at Mountain High they got up to 7″ in some spots. That photo above is Mountain High this morning, and if you aren’t familiar with it you can see that California sunshine does make for some pleasant skiing…did you know there is another “Big Bear”? Gotta look all the way east to Pennsylvania, and then about as far east and north as you can go in Pennsy, and you find a small but mighty resort with the improbable name of Ski Big Bear at Masthope Mountain. But don’t do it today, they’re closed on Wednesdays…and if you had any doubts about Mikaela Shiffrin’s domination of this World Cup Season, psst, she won again in Flachau under the lights last night. That’s victory #41 for her career, and she’s now 800 (eight HUNDRED) points ahead of Wendy Holdener in the overall. Photo below taken of the top trio in Flachau; Shiffrin is flanked by Austria’s Bernadette Schild, left, and Swedish star Frida Hansdotter. The boys are in Wengen, Switzerland for the annual Lauberhorn downhill. Yesterday’s training run was canned due to weather.
