News Roundup 1/25/17 — Movie Night!

25 January 2017 — Tragedy at Squaw Valley CA yesterday morning when 42-year-old ski patroller Joseph Zuiches was killed during avalanche control at the top of Gold Coast Ridge. It is believed he was killed by the detonation of an ammonium nitrate charge, according to the resort and the Placer County Sheriff’s Office. Zuiches is survived by his wife and infant son, and was a member of the Squaw Valley patrol since 2012…the flakey weather seems to have been surprisingly helpful to many of the resorts in the northeast; a mixed bag of snow/sleet/rain has actually added to the base at most of the major players. Photo above shows Plattekill in New York’s Catskills this morning; they gleaned about 8″ in the last couple days and will be serving up most of their terrain this weekend. Places like Montage PA got mostly snow, even Mountain Creek NJ was north enough and/or high enough to get a lot more snowish stuff than they did rain…after some road closures the Utah areas are firing on all cylinders this morning, Powder Mountain was closed yesterday after receiving over three feet of snow, they’ve reopened with everything but the Paradise, Lightning Ridge, and Powder Country sections which are still unstable. Patrol expected to drop the ropes on Paradise sometime today. Even PowMow Marketing Manager Jean-Pierre Goulet was stranded on State Road 158 yesterday after his truck was pinned by avalanches. Goulet had just finished helping the resort close down around 2:30 pm. About 30 PowMow employees spent the night up on the property, either in buildings or with local on-mountain homeowners…Little Cottonwood Canyon was also closed, UT highway people have cleared it nicely and you’re good to go today. Alta reporting 77″ from the same system…New Mexico’s Taos having a great season, they aren’t getting pounded however the snow continues to pile up slowly but surely, 35″ accumulated in the past week…New Hampshire’s Wildcat getting snow, snow, snow, they’re 100% open…back to New York, yesterday Governor Andrew Cuomo held a press conference and promised some $20 million in improvements to both Whiteface and Gore. They’re talking about new lifts, mountain coasters, all that sort of stuff. Based on what he said I think hizzoner needs to increase the limit on his credit card. Ain’t no way they’re going get everything done for the amount he’s budgeting…snowing at Caberfae Peaks in Michigan this morning; even they weren’t immune to the recent warm up. Even so they’ve got everything but the South Peak Trail open…the Ohio areas are looking grim but they’re open; let’s hope the cold blows back in as expected…back to Michigan, more on that dude who started the nearly-tragic fire at Boyne Highlands. Emmett County Sheriff Pete Wallin says 31-year-old David Soltysiak “admitted to being under the influence of alcohol (B.A. clocked in at 0.16) and he admitted to taking Adderall and Molly, and having acid in his room.” In case you were unaware, Soltysiak admitted to the arson…congrats to Britain’s Millie Knight and guide Brett Wild won downhill gold on the opening day of the World Para Alpine Skiing Championships in Tarvisio, Ialy. The visually impaired 18-year-old edged five-time Paralympic champion Henrieta Farkasova of Slovakia by 1.2 seconds…MOVIE NIGHT! To all my cable TV cord-cutter friends, first off, I salute you! Secondly, there are two movies streaming FREE right now that you don’t want to miss. Even if you’re paying $150/month like I am for the Hallmark Channel and first run episodes of This is That or whatever it’s called, you can still watch these movies. First up is Warren Miller‘s 2011 offering, Like There’s No Tomorrow, which can be accessed by clicking here. And on Red Bull TV they are showing Streif: One Hell of a Ride, among other things, and you can view that by clicking here. Now I don’t know how long they’ll be streaming these features for free; the Warren Miller Entertainment group says it’s for a limited time…if you miss these or simply don’t have time, or if you’re just itching to watch a ski film but you’re at work and you need to keep the sound off, our latest YouTube vid on Mad River Glen’s Birdland novice section will do that for you in just under sixty seconds.
