From Mammoth Mountain in California to Sugarloaf in Maine — and a lot of places in between — we’re enjoying the best November in recent memory. Mammoth pulled in 6″ overnight, while Sugarloaf totals were up to two feet from yesterday’s storm…photo above taken this morning from the webcam at Mad River Glen Vermont; they’re spinning the single chair again today. What’s remarkable about that is, they usually don’t open until mid-December…south a bit in the Green Mountain State, reports that Magic Mountain was going to wait for the weekend have been buried by over a foot of fresh; they’ll crank it all up tomorrow; Red Chair will spin at 9am, stay open for Friday and then into the “opening” weekend. Magic sez “there’s just so much snow, and with our prior base, the entire mountain will be OPEN including all the woods!” Well that’s fantastic, again this is November…northern end of the state, Jay Peak has been open for a bit, they’re adding the tram this weekend…not to be a downer here, but let’s remember this is New England and she can be a fickle beast. I recall some very solid early season skiing circa 2006, I was carving fresh at Killington around November 12. Christmas week I was back in Killington, and I watched people play golf. All I’m saying is, this is November, let’s not get ahead of ourselves here…this same snow system has dumped up to 10″ in the Berkshires; Jiminy Peak reports that they’ll reopen Friday…back to California, where Boreal is often first to open (and did so again this season) they received enough snow that they’re going top-to-bottom today. Looks like they’ll be running that way from here on out…down at Homewood Mountain Resort, up to two feet of fresh snow expected for the weekend…Montana’s Big Sky up and running, not a lot of terrain but still plenty for the early season traffic…Atomic Skis putting together some sort of free travel package in honor of World Snow Day, for more information click here (goes to the FIS World Cup site) you then have to tag a photo or some such thing…and BTW we got a shipment of new Ski Bum stickers, just came in, so if you contacted me for a sticker, it’s on the way. Thanks for your patience….to Mr. Stephen Hillenburg, we say a sincere thank you and rest in peace.
